MFA 3 - Theatre

From 1942 to 2020

Why are you making this piece?
Since the beginning of the epidemic, I have followed the notice from the local authority to stay at home and stay alive. Since the food in my house has become thinner recently, I have to go out to hunt. Firstly, I found that I was completely expired, so I cut my hair. I was fully armed then I good to go to Walmart. I found what I needed, but I can’t find any toilet paper on any shelf… I just can’t get it why stock the toilet paper, is it because of the fear of sickness and coughing? Why don’t buy a mask? I found a “lipstick effect” online. I believe this could explain this kind of psychology. I choose to believe it.
I had some experience when I was a kid and that experience taught me I could use any paper-like material to handle this issue, there is a sexy Chinese verb which I think is perfect to use for this method – 挼. And dear friends, you must know that toilet paper is water-soluble, but not every paper uses this technology. So, Good Luck.
What is the idea behind the music?
I chose these two paintings because I occasionally saw an article in the newspaper. The article was very long and well written, but I did n’t really read anything at all. I got inspiration from those two paintings. In 1942, the United States had tension with Japan. At that time, the United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Decree No. 9066 to establish a concentration camp for Japanese immigration and Japanese people, most of them were the third generation of immigrants who have nothing to do with Japan at all. Concentration camps hold about 120,000 people and confiscated their property. The government’s encouragement of discrimination against Japanese, various injustices and inhuman treatment happened. Now, What happened at that time is unimaginable in modern society.

In 2020, the current president, Trump tried to use the Chinese government to transfer internal conflicts. Social discrimination is happening again. As an Asian, I do n’t feel unsafe to live here, but sometimes seeing the information on the Internet and the words of some extremists really make me feel sad, because such people may live just next to me. My friends and I may be the next victims.
Human beings had great progress in terms of technology, but human nature has not changed much at all. 规则还是最一开始的弱肉强食, 难道不是吗?

About music

At the beginning of this music, it was a sign, just like the Chinese government’s initial reminder, but in fact, no one cared, and because of various restrictions, no one can do anything about it. until the music entered the next chapter-the outbreak. 在以前的时代的恐慌和愚昧是由于人眼看得见的战争, 而现在确是因为看不见的病毒.
The two results are the same but different, the same is between human, the difference is still between human.

Flight “Flight” is a 2019 concept album mirroring the timeline of human life, from birth until death and beyond. Each song, lyrically and sonically, represents a different time period, but all are reflections of life as a whole. Beginning with “Liftoff/Zephyr”, we rise into a period of birth and infancy, of wonder and innocence, carrying […]

Happy Headroom “Happy Headroom” was part of my mid-residency show titled “Living Threads” in February 2020. The immersive installation consisted of 4-channel video and sculptures. In this video, my mom and I perform rituals as a visceral process to create a dialogue between changing states of self and site. Hair, simultaneously dead and living, functions […]
