We Are Sitting In A Room

Inspired by Alvin Lucier's "I Am Sitting In A Room," this composition was created collaboratively by 12 students in my Production as Composition class at CalArts, currently "sheltering in place" at locations all around the globe.
It started with a room tone...Then each student contributed a harmonic of 60 Hz and a B flat.
I mixed everything together at my home studio, and then we sent that mix around and passed it from student to student, who each re-amplified and re-recorded it in the space that they were currently occupying and sent it to the next student (picking up environmental noise and resonant frequencies with each iteration).

To all what will always stay in counselor’s rooms. To […]

“The S.O.F.T. (Sonification Of Flowing Temporality) Glass is an hourglass that makes and manipulates sound. In its final form, it will be a sculptural object that can double as a musical instrument, based on the simple and enduring timekeeping device dating back at least to the 16th century BC. Utilizing a variety of sensor types, […]

My artworks respond to the psychological impact of action and reaction (Sir Isaac Newton’s third law of motion). I like to think of this law in metaphorical terms beyond the literal mathematical implications. We exist in a constant state of action and reaction – every being is psychologically reacting to every action around that. Through […]

Hello, I am a Jazz Drums MFA ALUM (’19). My goal with this submission has been to find a way to make visuals that clearly represent what drummers practice –moving around the kit and using multiple limbs at once to create music. I wondered if there was a way to visualize this. I then realized […]
