DESCRIPTION :
A collaborative musical-dance performance by Oliver Muco Nicholson and Poppy Louise. Playing the koto whilst singing, Oliver performs a selection of original songs and folk arrangements. Poppy Louise performs a self-choreographed dance, interacting with the music in a shared exploration of lyrical and musical themes. Oliver has been developing this music in an ongoing independent study with Japanese music professor, Kozue Matsumoto. This has prompted ideas about digitally affecting the sound of the koto in real time. This performance will showcase these ideas to create unique and interesting textures through the instrument. Together, the project seeks to explore ideas of space, modality, time and the senses, as well as exhibit influences from the traditions of Japanese and European folk songs as well as modern composition.
